Yellowknife (Nov 17/04) - People with disabilities seeking work and enjoying success in their chosen employment is the premise of "Working Lives," a video produced by the Yellowknife Employability office.

The purpose of the video is to try to get employers to hire more disabled workers.

"It's an employment video for people with disabilities working in different places in town," said Rae Celotti, program co-ordinator with Employability.

"We're trying to raise awareness and hoping it will go into the communities and show that people with disabilities can work and can be an asset to your business," said Celotti.

Some people are afraid of psychiatric disabilities while the employer will ask what is it going to cost to make the workplace accessible for people with physical disabilities, said Celotti.

A lot of disabled people in the communities surrounding Yellowknife aren't working but can work and be an asset to your business, she said.

Celotti gives credit for getting the video made to funding sources. Human Resources and Skills Development Canada came up with $40,000 in funding for the video.

Other funding sources include the Yellowknife Association for Community Living, the Government of the Northwest Territories, the NWT Council of Persons with Disabilities and the Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314.
