Pond Inlet (Oct 04/04) - A 21-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with an incident where rifle shots were fired at the front door of a house.

RCMP received more than one complaint of a man trying to break in to a housing unit in a four-plex located near the Government of Nunavut offices in Pond Inlet at about 10 p.m. on Sept. 27. Before police arrived, as many as six shots were fired from a rifle, four of which penetrated the front door of the unit.

Police said three people were in the house, but nobody was injured. Alcohol was believed to be a factor.

"(The incident was) not domestic related because the person was inside the house with her partner," said RCMP Cpl. Gavin Nash.

The accused surrendered when police knocked on his door.

Alie Kippomee of Pond Inlet is being held in custody. He is expected to appear in court in Iqaluit Oct. 5. As of Sept. 30, the RCMP major crimes division was still in the community interviewing witnesses.
