Trivia madness hits Yk

Yellowknife (Oct 27/04) - What's the name of the male gymnast who won gold for Canada at the last Olympics? Is Alaska farther from Florida than Hawaii? Do female caribou have antlers?

Those were some of the questions asked during trivia night at Ecole St. Joseph on Oct. 23. This is the second year for the annual fundraiser.

Trivia minds paid $10 each to play in the gruelling four-hour question fest. The entry fees and money raised through a silent auction went to the school.

"This money goes to trees and flowers for our school grounds -- to beautification," said Flo Campbell, school principal.

The teachers were impressed by the quality of Yellowknife's trivia players.

Only one team out of 25 ended up getting less than 50 per cent of the questions right. Cash prizes were an incentive to put on the thinking caps and one team walked away with a more than trivial amount.

The team Where's Randy? -- made up of Dave Bartlett, Randy Henderson, Elaine Look and Peter Skinner -- won three of the four rounds and took first place for the second year in a row.

"They should be banned next year," said Rose Latremouille from the second place team, the Flashers.

But it wasn't about the money.

"Our nephews go to this school, so we came out to support it," said Donna Latremouille.

"It's fun."

Oh, and the answers are Kyle Shewfelt, Hawaii and yes.
