Another fuel spill in Coral waters

Coral Harbour (Oct 27/04) - Yet another fuel spill in the Kivalliq region has led to Community and Government Services (CGS) undertaking a review of the fuel resupply contract with Woodward's Oil Ltd.

The Mokami tanker spilled about 200 litres while refuelling Coral this past week.

The same tanker dumped 1,500 litres in Coral waters during the 2003 resupply.

The Mokami also spilled 1,000 litres of diesel fuel into Johnson's Cove while resupplying Rankin Inlet earlier this year.

A problem with the hose coupling during resupply continues to plague the Mokami's deliveries to Kivalliq ports.

Rising number of spills

CGS Minister Peter Kilabuk said he is concerned about the rising number of oil spills in Nunavut during the past two seasons.

"My staff met with both Woodward's and Transport Canada officials about the previous incidents," said Kilabuk.

"I am surprised at this latest incident, despite additional preventative measures having been put in place by Woodward's.

"Woodward's general manager will be meeting with CGS staff in Iqaluit this week.

"I will be undertaking a review of the fuel resupply contract."
