Snazzy new bills hard to duplicate

Yellowknife (Oct 20/04) - Counterfeiters are going to have a rough time trying to copy the new $20 bill.

There's a shifting-coloured holographic stripe on the front left of the $20 bill, along with a ghost, or watermark, image of Queen Elizabeth II on the front right.

The number "20" aligns perfectly on the front and back, along with another vertical watermark on the front right of the bill.

The serial numbers on the back of the bill can be seen when held up to the light, and the famous sculpture of the Spirit of the Haida Gwaii, displayed within Ottawa's Canadian Museum of Civilization, is prominently depicted on the back right of the bill.

Bill Reid created the sculpture.

Three other Reid works are also featured on the bill, including a creature not unfamiliar to Northerners -- the raven.

New $100 bills were introduced earlier this year and new $50 bills are expected to arrive within the next four to six weeks.
