The incident began when a resident barricaded himself alone in his own house on Tuesday, Oct. 12, and threatened to kill himself.
The six-member RCMP detachment responded to the call at approximately 6 a.m. They promptly surrounded the home and negotiated with the man through a window and over the phone, Const. Dan Melanson said. Four hours later, the man surrendered and the officers seized a number of hunting rifles from the home.
Jerry Etegik, 25, is facing two firearms related charges, and two counts of breach of probation. He will appear in Cambridge Bay court Nov. 23.
