Speeders targeted in school zones

Yellowknife (Sep 08/04) - As students wandered back to school, the RCMP and the Municipal Enforcement Department took the opportunity to remind motorists of the speed limits in school zones.

In two days, the two units wrote a total of 58 tickets in school zones around Yellowknife.

Along with those two days of speed enforcement, RCMP issued seven traffic tickets between Aug. 23 to Sept. 5.

RCMP responded to 445 calls for service during those two weeks.

Among those calls, 131 were calls to assist with intoxicated persons.

There were 20 break ins during this time period: 11 were into businesses and nine were into residences. Among the items stolen were keys, cash, tools and a generator.

There were six theft from vehicles reported. Items stolen included a wallet, a cell phone, sunglasses and a licence plate.

There were 41 complaints of assault, of which 34 were common fights and domestic disputes. Seven of these included assault with a weapon. Weapons used were a knife and rocks.

Police investigated 11 complaints of impaired driving. One person was charged with impaired driving and one 24-hour suspension was issued.

Ten accidents were reported over the two-week period, three of which involved injuries, four involved damage to the vehicle in excess of $1,000, and three involved damage under $1,000.

Two vehicles were reported stolen, and were subsequently recovered by police.

There was one report of sexual assault.

Five reports of shoplifting were received. Items stolen included food, CDs, and computer games.
