Randy Komhyr, project planner/analyst for the RCMP in Winnipeg, said the structure will cost an estimated $1.53 million and is expected to be complete by mid-December.
"The existing facility is a patrol cabin, a trailer-type unit. It's small and outdated and was built for one member," Komhyr said.
The new 257-square-metre detachment will be much larger and contain up-to-date security, said Cpl. Ronald Rose, one of two RCMP officers stationed in Paulatuk.
"The old building is very small and doesn't satisfy our needs," Rose said.
It will also contain a three-cell block and transient living quarters for visiting police officers.
Rose said as soon as the annual barge arrived in August with the construction materials, the work began.
The new office is being built near the old office.
Komhyr also said the detachment will have a secure bay for RCMP vehicles.
