Iqaluit (Sep 06/04) - Madam Justice Louise Charron, who has served as a Deputy Judge for the Nunavut Court of Justice since June 2000, has been appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Nunavut has three resident judges and a pool of deputy judges from other jurisdictions who preside over certain court cases.

Charron is a criminal law specialist.

She was named to the Supreme Court along with Madame Justice Rosalie Abella last week.

A date for the two judges' swearing in at the Supreme Court of Canada has yet to be determined.

Charron visited Nunavut once and made stops in both Clyde River and Pond Inlet.

A 1975 graduate of the University of Ottawa, she was called to the Ontario Bar in 1977.

She was in private practice for several years and served as Assistant Crown Attorney for the Judicial District of Ottawa-Carelton.

Charron was also assistant professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa 1985-1988.
