Yellowknife (Sep 29/04) - Who are you running for? Who in your life is affected by breast cancer? Mothers, sisters, daughters, friends -- everyone knows a woman who is facing or has faced the scourge of breast cancer. On Oct. 3, people across the nation will step out to show they care.

The CIBC Run for the Cure takes place in Yellowknife on Sunday and it's not too late to register, donate, or just show support.

This is the ninth year for the Yellowknife run, which attracted 1,158 participants and raised $193,000 in 2003.

Anna Meckling, marketing and media co-ordinator for the Yellowknife run, said registration is going well so far.

"Yellowknifers are a last minute sort of people, but they always come through on the day of the run," she said.

Meckling added that there has been a good turn-out, with new teams joining and most of last year's participants preparing to run again. All told, about 35 teams have signed up.

Proceeds from the run, which are raised through donations and sponsorship -- both individual and corporate -- benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The money goes to breast cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education.

There were over 18,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in Canada last year.

The event, a 3km or 5km walk or run, starts at St. Patrick high school. Opening ceremonies begin at 1 p.m. and the run starts at 2 p.m.

Participants can register on the day of the run starting at 11 a.m., but early registration will also be held Oct. 1 in the main floor boardroom at 5004-50th Ave from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
