Coral Harbour (Sep 22/04) - In town for a drug awareness presentation, Bart, Nunavut's drug-sniffing dog, got an unexpected workout earlier this month.

Bart and his RCMP handler were conducting a random search at the Coral airport Sept. 7, when the dog caught the scent of some drugs.

After a quick search, police seized 21 grams of marijuana.

Cpl. Alex Lyon said the dog was in town for a presentation on drug and alcohol awareness at Sakku school.

The detachment took advantage of his visit to perform some standard searches, the airport search being one of them.

Lyon said Bart will return to the community in the future for similar searches.

Brian Eetuk of Baker Lake has been charged with possession of a controlled substance and breach of probation.

Eetuk is scheduled to appear in the Nunavut Court of Justice on Jan. 20.
