Cape Dorset (Sep 20/04) - Cape Dorset's favourite radio personality, Kanayuk Bell, is hanging up her microphone, at least for now, so she can settle into her new job at Sam Pudlat school.

Quppa Namonai will take her place on the 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. shift each day at the radio station, which is 105.1 on the FM dial.

Bell, reached at the school last week, was quick to say she is really enjoying her new job but she isn't leaving radio forever.

"I'm not giving it up," said Bell, who started in radio in Cape Dorset in 1976, adding she's, "just not doing it every day."

She couldn't pass up a chance to work at the school, where she now assists a special needs student in Grade 1 who is in a wheelchair.

Ivan Payne, principal of Sam Pudlat school, is very pleased to have Bell on staff.

He can sense already that Bell will fit in well at a school that takes prides its commitment to Inuit culture and language -- and even boasts an Order of Canada recipient on its staff in teacher Annie Manning.

"Everybody knows (Bell). She's very well liked in the community," said Payne.
