Inuvik (July 09/04) - Police, the Department of Transportation and RWED have recently teamed up to raise awareness about the 25th anniversary of the Dempster Highway.

RWED's regional tourism officer Judith Veenas -- instrumental in organizing the recent 25th anniversary celebrations that wrapped up in town the other week -- says both the RCMP and the Department of Transportation were very willing to help the cause.

For the Department of Transportation's part, regional superintendent Gurdev Jagpal unveiled one of 24 signs commemorating the 25th anniversary to be posted at intervals along the Dempster.

As for the RCMP, its highway patrol/mobile command centre will be stocked full of similar stickers to be dispensed to motorists police may encounter on the Dempster.

"This is good for tourism and we worked well together," said Jagpal. "Judith has been doing an excellent job (promoting the highway)."

Staff Sgt. Al McCambridge says each year the RCMP patrols the Dempster, offering roadside assistance and enforcing the rules of the road.

"This is great for community relations and everybody we run into, we'll give them a souvenir," he said.

McCambridge added that even motorists stopped for driving infractions on the Dempster can have a sticker, as well.
