Pond Inlet (July 05/04) - June 25 was a big day for nurses in Pond Inlet. That was the day they officially opened the new health centre.

"It's fantastic. We're so happy with our new building," said Di Schulze, supervisor of health and community programs.

Schulze said the new centre has been a long time coming.

"We've needed a new building for as long as I've been here, which is five years," she said. "Our old facility was in poor repair and very crowded."

"We now have room to provide effective health care," she added.

The nurses aren't the only people with a new facility. The $8.1 million centre will integrate health and social services and public health.

"It's better now that all the services are under one roof," she said.

Minister of Health and Social Services Levinia Brown, said this new facility shows the commitment the government is making to better health care.

While Pond Inlet is the first community in the Baffin to have a new health centre, Brown said there will be more.

"It's important that we have facilities that meet the needs of the people," she said.

"I think this health centre is something the community can be proud of," she added.

Brown said the government is creating a plan to make sure there is proper health care in the communities. She added that it will take time.

The government has started construction on a new health centre in Iglulik. Work is also moving forward on new centres in Rankin Inlet, Cambridge Bay and Iqaluit.
