Iqaluit (July 12/04) - Matthew Ford-Rogers is proof that one person can make a difference, no matter how old they are.

The five year-old went a year without a haircut to help raise money for cancer research.

July 1 it all came off.

Iqaluit residents packed into the Grind and Brew to watch.

Matthew was a little nervous at having his hair cut with so many people watching, but it was exciting, he said.

"It feels good to have my hair cut," he said.

Matthew's mother, Amanda, said she was proud.

"I have goose bumps. It's a great moment" she said. "He did very well today."

Amanda said that Matthew had been looking forward to getting his hair cut.

"All morning he kept saying this was going to be a big day," she said.

After the hair cut, Matthew headed for the play ground.

Raising money for cancer

Matthew's family and friends have been collecting donations for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Amanda said they don't quite have a total for all the money collected, but at last count they had more than $1,300.

"The community has really supported Matthew," she said.

Matthew said it felt good to be able to help people who are sick with cancer.
