Inuvik (May 07/04) - Inuvik's Delta Demons just can't seem to get enough wrestling.

And thanks to their coach Steve Baryluk, the squad will get a chance later this month to take its skills to the next level.

Baryluk, who revitalized Samuel Hearne secondary school's wrestling program in 2002, is the driving force behind a four-day wrestling camp scheduled to take place in town from May 14 to 17.

Heading up the coaching staff for the camp will be either University of Alberta's wrestling coach Vang Ioannedes or national program co-ordinator for Canada Wrestling Mike Payette.

"Vang is waiting to hear if he's coaching the national team for the world championships," said Baryluk of the camp's instructor prospects.

During Baryluk's university days, he trained for a year and a half under Ioannedes before having to retire from competition due to injuries.

However, the former territorial champion, who began wrestling in Inuvik in Grade 6, never lost his love of the sport. Following his return to Inuvik, Baryluk decided to share his knowledge with a new generation of wrestlers.

"Once I left for university, the program (at SHSS) stopped," he said. "So, I started it up again because it's something I enjoy doing and to provide some opportunities I never had."

For Baryluk and his Demons, opportunities abounded this season with a very busy schedule that included a trip to Edmonton to attend a junior camp, territorial finals in Fort Smith, a mid-February tournament in Saskatoon and representation at the Arctic Winter Games.

Attending the camp, Baryluk hopes will be a host of Grade 7 to 12 youth from around the region.

"We've already got confirmation that Fort McPherson will be sending four wrestlers and anybody else who can get here is welcome to attend," Baryluk said. "Any size is OK and we want males and females."

He also hopes potential coaches, willing to carry on the practice regiment once students return to their respective communities, will attend.

Lending a helping hand from the Delta Demons will be veteran wrestlers Jennifer DeBastien and Glenna Inglangasuk.

"It's like no other sport," said Inglangasuk of her interest in wrestling. "It's a team effort, but you have to go out on the mat and do it alone."

As for DeBastien, she hopes she can take a page from coach Baryluk's manual when she instructs first-timers at the upcoming camp.

"He's a great coach who knows how to be fun and strict when he has to," she said.

Registration fee for the camp is $20 and in addition to first rate instruction, participants will receive a T-shirt and skills-level badges.
