Sex offender strays

Yellowknife (May 28/04) - Yellowknife RCMP are searching for a 41-year-old convicted sex offender after he failed to report to his parole officer last week.

Albert Douglas Casaway has been missing at least since the weekend and investigators have been talking to friends and family members in an effort to track him down, said Sgt. Steve McVarnock.

Casaway was convicted of sexual assault in May 2002 and sentenced to three years in prison. He was released in July 2003, and was scheduled to be on parole until May 2005.

Casaway has a history of violating court orders. He was twice convicted of failing to comply with his probation, once in December 2001 and again in January 2002.

His parole was revoked after missing a session with his parole officer last week, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police say Casaway's last known address was an apartment in downtown Yellowknife, but investigators aren't sure if he is still in the city.

"With the ferry running again there are options. At this point, we don't have any information as to whether or not he is still in the city," said McVarnock.

McVarnock said police don't consider Casaway to be a threat to the public.

Casaway is 5'6" (170 cm) tall, weighs about 154 pounds (70 kg) and has short black hair and brown eyes.
