Yellowknife (May 17/04) - NWT RCMP chief superintendent Everett Summerfield has been inducted into the Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

Superintendent Summerfield, of the "G" division in Yellowknife, was one of three people inducted into the order by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson during a ceremony in Ottawa, May 10.

Established in 2000, the award honours police contributions to Canada, the police community and the community at large.

"I am extremely proud of the people of the RCMP who work so diligently on behalf of their communities every day, and their families, whose contribution is critical to our work," Summerfield said in a release.

Summerfield has been a part of the development of numerous community-based programs in response to crime. He is also responsible for a number of aboriginal policing initiatives.
