Husky trout are waiting for you

Tuktoyaktuk (May 17/04) - There is nothing quite like going out on the land to take advantage of the great fishing.

And in Tuktoyaktuk, residents are taking part in the 2004 Husky Lakes trout fishing derby.

Bragging rights can be earned for not only the heaviest fish, but also the lightest one, and also for the darkest tan of the person doing the fishing.

Janna Bulmer, recreation co-ordinator for the hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk, says the long-time derby has become a popular way to mark the beginning of spring in the region.

Participants in the derby travel about two hours by snowmobile to the Husky Lakes region and then set up camp in hopes of catching the big one.

"It's an area where many members of our community go to fish," Bulmer says.

Last year's heaviest fish weighed in at 36lb, while the lightest fish weighed 4lb. The contest will end May 31. Any potential winning fish must be brought to Kitti Hall for weigh-in before that time.

Winners will be announced during the Tuk spring games, June 12.
