All about birds

Yellowknife (Apr 09/04) - As winter eases its grip on Yellowknife, grey jays and sparrows are buzzing and chirping for their spots at backyard feeders.

The wildlife and fisheries division of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development took this time to teach local students about birds, particularly Northern species.

They invited Yellowknife students to wander through six stations in a space at the Centre Square Mall, each intent on teaching kids more about the birds they see around them.

The lessons coincide with National Wildlife Week, declared by the Canadian Wildlife Federation.

More than 650 students were on hand April 5-8 for this year's event, themed "Give backyard birds something to think about."

Organizer Joanna Tiemessen says Wildlife and Fisheries invites schools and the public to the annual event. They try to make each station hands-on to facilitate easier learning for the kids.
