Range Lake teachers complete restitution training

Northern News Services

Yellowknife (Apr 30/04) - Nearing the end of an eight-year effort to reduce discipline problems in schools and improve performance, the Restitution Peace Project is on track.

Teachers from Range Lake North and Aurora College students completed the Applied Control Theory workshops in Yellowknife, April 13-22.

Range Lake North school squeaked into the federally-funded project in September. It was the last of nine schools across the NWT and Nunavut to join the effort.

J.H. Sisson's school was the first to test out the project back in 1998. The school has seen a dramatic decrease in discipline problems since then.

Lynn Taylor, project co-ordinator, said she hopes the training will continue and reach beyond the schools

The project is expanding to include parents as well, says Taylor.

"It's a whole school culture building process. We're pretty much there," says Taylor. "I'd like to see it as part of the regular offerings by schools."
