Iqaluit (Apr 26/04) - The last thing Elisapee Davidee Aningmiuq expected on her birthday, April 16, was to receive the most prestigious award of the year: the title of Honourary Toonik.

Aningmiuq was presented with the award at the Toonik Tyme opening ceremonies.

"My family took me out for supper and when I came back home there was a message on my answering machine. It said that I had better get down to Nakasuk school right away," Aningmiuq said.

After the award was presented the crowd of about 300 people sang happy birthday to Aningmiuq.

"I am honoured to represent Iqaluit with this award," she said.

Over many years, Aningmiuq has been involved in homelessness issues, healing sessions, promoting performing arts and youth development. One of Aningmiuq's biggest achievements has been organizing a summer camp for single parents for the past five years.

Single parents spend the summer out on the land to learn traditional life skills.

"My real belief is to pass on the traditional skills and knowledge that I have learned," Aningmiuq said. "I want to promote wellness in our community and help those who are disadvantaged."
