Panniqtuuq (Apr 12/04) - April 5 was a big day as residents celebrated the 32nd anniversary of the hamlet's incorporation.

Residents gathered on the sea ice and the Atagoovik Ilisavik school to take part in the festivities.

Jack Maniapik, chairperson of the recreation department, said it was a great celebration.

"I think it went very well. The weather was perfect and everyone had a great time."

Mayor Hezakiah Oshutapik officially started the celebration at 10 a.m. with a flag raising at the hamlet office.

"Becoming a hamlet means that we can govern our own community," he said. "It's important that we celebrate our history."

Hamlet day is an example of how much pride residents have in their community. Oshutapik said they always have a great turn out for the games and feast.

Maniapik said the best part about hamlet day is seeing the community come together and have fun. It's a full-day civic holiday for hamlet workers and a half-day off for territorial government workers. Maniapik said some stores were closed for the day.

"I think people look forward to the games. It's nice to see people enjoying themselves and smiling away."

One of the most popular games for children is a version of tag. Groups of children were blindfolded and had to find their partners by the sound of their voice.
