Police stop school fight

Coppermine (Apr 12/04) - Jimmy Hikok Elementary School staff called the RCMP in Kugluktuk on March 22 to help stop three young male students from beating up on a lone male student in the school.

Cpl. Franco Radeschi said that while the incident was serious enough for the school to call the police, he does not believe bullying is out of control at the school.

"Sometimes when the school can't handle it they call us," Radeschi said. "They call us if it's the same kids and they are not listening to the teachers or the principal."

Radeschi added that his detachment is going to introduce the Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education (DARE) program (which also teaches lessons on bullying) into the schools in Kugluktuk next year.
