It has been two weeks since he started in his new position, and already it has been a learning experience.
Although he has lived in the community most of his life, there are still things Merkosak is learning about the area, its people and culture.
"I've been trying to familiarize myself with the centre. I've gotten to play with artifacts that I never even knew about," he said.
"I've been learning about the history of Pond Inlet."
Merkosak said the centre plays a big role in preserving the culture in Pond Inlet.
In the summer time, the centre is busy catering to tourists who come in on cruise ships.
Merkosak explained his goal is to promote the culture, the centre and the community.
He is hoping to achieve that by providing more community programs and cultural activities.
"This is the centre of everything. It brings together the Inuit community and the tourists," he said.
The next few months will be busy for Merkosak. Along with planning daily programs, the centre will be preparing for the summer tourist season.
"There's a lot of work to be done," he said. "Pond Inlet is starting to become well known. With more people visiting, I want to see the centre grow."
