Crime victims offered support

Yellowknife (Mar 05/04) - Victims of crime should not have to face their situations alone, says the new victims services co-ordinator at the Native Women's Association.

"But getting the word out we are here to help is not always easy," Clarinda Spijkerman said of the confidential service.

"For those who have been traumatized, it's important to realize we can assist when they are most vulnerable."

From the time soon after a crime like assault occurs, she said victim services workers are ready to help -- from its offices located in both the RCMP headquarters and the Native Women's Association.

Marie Speakman, a victim services worker for the association, said not only support is provided to the victim, but also other services such as helping prepare a victim impact statement.

"Some victims are afraid to go to the RCMP, so this is a place they can go for support," Speakman said.

At other times, she said the association receives a call from a hospital, the RCMP or the Crown prosecutor's office to provide assistance in the form of guidance or support.

"We're a link within the community for someone traumatized," Speakman said.

Spijkerman said the group also provides community workshops every three months on topics such as family violence, communications and drug abuse.

"These workshops help by informing the public we are here and also by educating them," Spijkerman added.

Those needing the service of victim services, located on 49th Street, may call 920-2978 Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., or 873-5509.
