Arctic Bay (Mar 22/04) - Seven students in Arctic Bay are hoping to take the Internet and their education to new heights.

The students spent the week of Feb. 16-20 learning how to design Web pages and post them to the Internet.

"It was a great program, even if we did have to come in on our holiday," said Neil Kigudaq, a student of the program.

The students are part of Nunavut Youth Consulting. They enroled in the program as a way to advertise the youth group and help raise money for future projects.

"The Internet is a great way to promote the group," he said.

Nataniel Chouinard said he has always been interested in creating Web pages and jumped at the chance to take the course when it was offered. For him, the best part was manipulating pictures and laying everything out on the screen.

"It has been a great experience," said Matthew Akikuluk, another student in the program.

The participants hope to use their new knowledge to create an Arctic Bay Web site to promote their community. The project is ongoing, but they hope to have it finished soon.

The three agree: creating a Web page isn't easy. They have to spend a lot of time researching facts to make sure the information on the site is accurate.

"Finding the history of Arctic Bay has taken us a little longer then we expected," Kigudaq said.

The students' goal is that the site will help promote the community. The course was offered through the literacy program at Arctic College Learning Centre in Arctic Bay.
