Pond Inlet (Mar 22/04) - After a snowmobile collided with the back end of a pick-up truck, the RCMP in Pond Inlet are urging snowmobilers to use more caution in the community.

The police are investigating an accident that occurred on March 18.

The snowmobile ran a stop sign at an intersection and collided with a pick-up truck.

The 22-year-old man driving the snowmobile was taken to the Pond Inlet Health Centre where he was stabilized and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Two males in the truck did not sustain any injuries in the accident.

Cpl. Gavin Nash of the Pond Inlet detachment said this accident shows that speeding snowmobiles are problematic in Nunavut communities.

"I think it's a big problem, not only in our community but in all the communities," he said. "Most of the roads in our town are covered in ice.

"People on snowmobiles can't stop or steer with those conditions. We urge people to slow down."

Along with slowing down, Nash also recommends that people wear helmets while riding on snowmobiles.

While it's not mandatory to wear a helmet, Nash said it just makes sense.
