Charges pending for beating death

Iqaluit (Mar 01/04) - The RCMP are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a beating death in Iqaluit in January.

On Jan. 9 the police were called on an apartment in the 300 area of Iqaluit. They discovered a 40-year-old man who had been beaten.

Because of the severity of his wounds, the man was transferred to Ottawa Civic Hospital, where he later died.

Const. Chris Coles, media liaison officer for the RCMP, said no charges have been laid yet.

He said criminal charges will be determinedo the outcome of the investigation.

"Some investigations do take time," he said.

One of the pieces of information police are waiting for is autopsy results for the deceased. Coles couldn't comment further.
