Guides train for the hunt

Gjoa Haven (Feb 09/04) - Twelve men headed out onto the land last week, about 160km outside of Gjoa Haven, to harvest muskox and learn how to guide a successful sport hunt.

Many of the men taking part in this course are hunters and have been guides already.

They know the land.

Many were born and raised in the area.

This course is about getting properly certified to lead a sport hunt -- something these guides-in-training are going to need if they want to work for outfitters under the new Wildlife Act.

The one month course runs Jan. 15 to Feb. 13.

"You can never have too much training," said wildlife official Dave White.

He helped secure the funding and organize the two-part course.
