Yellowknife (Feb 06/04) - A significant seizure of marijuana was made by Yellowknife RCMP on Feb. 2 and 3.

After a lengthy investigation, a search warrant was executed on a Yellowknife residence, resulting in the seizure of 1.5 pounds of marijuana packaged in various quantities, suitable for street sale, as well as five to 10 ml of cannabis resin and $500 cash.

A second search warrant executed on a Yellowknife storage facility yielded a further two pounds of marijuana and $3,000 cash.

An adult male from Yellowknife was arrested and charged as a result of the investigation.

Sgt. Steve Mc-Varnock of the Yellowknife detachment said to find such drug quantities is not uncommon, yet he deemed the seizure significant for one investigation.

"We don't have many grow operations here, so people transporting drugs here want to make it worth their while," McVarnock said.

He said much of the marijuana comes from British Columbia.

The seizure was the result of a long investigation by Const. Paul Mounsey of the Yellowknife detachment, he said.

Police estimated value of the marijuana to be about $31,500, while the cannabis resin is worth about $300.
