Yellowknife (Feb 06/04) - Everywhere you went this week, trades and technology jobs were on the tip of people's tongues.

Apprenticeship Week in the NWT, Feb 2-7, started off with a bang, as 200 girls gathered at the Explorer Hotel to learn about non-traditional careers for women.

The Skills Canada event featured local career women presenting workshops on their successful careers to the eager listeners.

Local schools, such as St. Patrick High school, put the emphasis on trades and technology careers with a series of lunch hour events. Premier Joe Handley even popped into the school for a manicure.

Later in the week, MLA Charles Dent joined a large crowd in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly for the Apprenticeship and Occupational Certification Awards Ceremony.

Dent, who is the minister of education, culture and employment for the GNWT, congratulated the apprentices for choosing careers in the ever-growing skilled-labour field. He also commented on the growing need for skilled labourers in the NWT.

With one of the best Apprenticeship programs in Canada, Northerners had a lot to celebrate this week.
