Yellowknife (Feb 20/04) - Compassion for those in need has led two Yellowknife women to organize a fundraising initiative for a young cancer victim.

Dale Johnston and Crystal Craig have met 3-year-old Shiri Casebeer-MacPherson only briefly, but identified a way to help her and her family during their time of need.

The idea of running a 50/50 draw to help the family with household expenses during their ordeal became reality as both women planned the event and soon had a stack of tickets for sale.

"We decided since the family is keeping two households, one in Edmonton and one in Yellowknife, they probably needed financial help," Johnston said.

Craig said it's a nice feeling to identify a need and be able to help.

"Sometimes we often get wrapped up in our own worlds, but it's important to remember there are others who may need our help," said Craig.

Young Shiri was first diagnosed with kidney cancer last September.

When Craig and Johnston, who are co-workers of Shiri's mom, Sheila, found out, they did not hesitate to extend the hand of friendship.

Meeting Shiri turned into a memorable experience for Johnston.

"She is so positive and full of energy," she said of the little girl.

"And she is very upbeat and smart."

The women hope the large stack of tickets for sale will quickly dwindle in order to help the family.

"We've had a good response from the public so far," Johnston said.

The 50/50 ticket draw will be held Feb. 27. To purchase tickets, one may call Dale at 920-8624 or Crystal at 873-7369. Wolverine Sports in Stanton Plaza will also sell the tickets on Saturday from noon until 3 p.m.
