Yellowknife (Feb 20/04) - Dozens of cheery yellow flowers will brighten Yellowknife again this April, during the Canadian Cancer Society's annual Daffodil Days campaign.

The first week of April is the first official campaign of the year for the society, said Tanya Krueger, revenue development co-ordinator for the Yellowknife office.

"Last year, we sold $25,000 in Yellowknife and we want to sell better than that this year," she said.

Not only will Yellowknife enjoy this early sign of spring, volunteers from other communities across the NWT will also receive bundles of blooms to sell. Inuvik, Fort Smith, Norman Wells, Cambridge Bay and Hay River volunteers will take part in the campaign, she said.

Any other communities wishing to sell the daffodils are welcome to contact her if a co-ordinator can be found, she said.

Unlike similar campaigns in the south, just getting the flowers here for people to buy requires an extra contribution.

"Canadian North donates the freight from Vancouver," she said.

Krueger has ordered 137 cases of daffodils for the territories, about 3,000 blossoms. The price per bunch will remain $5.

The society will take advance orders and the flowers will also be sold at several central locations around town.

As April is cancer awareness month, Krueger said volunteers are also needed for door-to-door canvassing.
