Council sets priorities

Yellowknife (Dec 08/03) - With her first month as mayor of Iqaluit behind her, Elisapee Sheutiapik understands just how much work comes with her new title.

"I knew it was going to be hard, but it's still a shock to me," she said.

The spacious mayor's office is still quite bare, but Sheutiapik has the next three years to add her personal touch.

The new council met for the first time in open chambers on Nov. 12. Sheutiapik was at the helm for the first time, and it was an experience she will remember.

"As deputy mayor I've chaired meetings, but that was my first time as mayor. I was a little nervous and there were a few points of orders made. We got through it," she said.

The biggest hurdle council has over the next month is the 2004 budget.

Sheutiapik has some ideas where she would like the money spent.

"There needs to be more houses built. That was one issue everyone has basically agreed with," she said.

Another pressing issue is the need for designated walking areas to make the city streets safer for pedestrians.

"Safety has been a big concern for this council," she said.

"Not only will it address safety, but trails will help to beautify the city."

Sheutiapik would also like to see some improvement in the community spirit.

"I think if we can get back our community spirit, everything else will fall into place," she said.

It will take time, Sheutiapik said, but she has at least three years to get the ball rolling.
