Yellowknife (Dec 31/03) - A raging fire levelled a Cassidy Point cabin over the weekend, causing an estimated $50,000 in damage.

The Yellowknife Fire Department received a call at 3:18 p.m., Dec. 27, alerting them of the fire. They dispatched four firefighters to the scene along the Ingraham Trail.

Deputy Fire Chief Clem St. Croix said the fire was fully involved by the time the crew reached the scene at 3:45 p.m.

"The building was completely destroyed," he said.

"The only thing you can do is protect exposures and put it out," St. Croix said.

Following the initial response from the fire department, 18 units responded to the fire in total.

The cabin was owned by Boyd Warner of Yellowknife. It was being leased to a tenant for the duration of the winter. The tenant was en route to Fort Providence for the holidays when he was alerted of the fire.

The wood stove had been lit prior to the tenant leaving the building, said St. Croix.

The building was insured up to $84,000, according to Warner, but the burned belongings of the tenant were uninsured.

Warner is not sure if he will rebuild the two-bedroom cabin because he was anticipating selling it in the spring.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshall's office.
