Yellowknife (Dec 10/03) - Sales at downtown shops are booming.

Tyler Thorpe with For Men Only said Christmas sales have been tremendous this year. Jordan Murray, also with For Men Only said the brisk sales have "kept them on our toes."

"Overall, the December average seems on par with last year. People are out shopping in force," said Thorpe.

Robin Williams with Radio Shack says sales have been excellent this year.

"Everyone's buying gadgets. Everyone's into the latest and greatest. Everyone wants to have a little electronic device," he said.

Radio Shack has been so busy they've opened a temporary outlet in the Lower YK Centre Mall.

"Sales picked up this year in around the American Thanksgiving near the end of November and it's been steady throughout. I think it might be the television commercials that puts things into high gear," he said.

Dan Hayward, owner of Headgear, said his sales have just about doubled over last year but added the increase is due to the store's expanded product line. Headgear now offers sports jerseys as well as Nascar jackets that have turned customers' heads.

"Seventy per cent of our business is out of town and with the Yellowknife Inn we get a lot of out-of-town traffic," said Hayward.

Hayward adds he's happy to be in the Centre Square Mall.

Aaron Hernandez, a manager with TFM/CD Plus, said sales are awesome.

"They're better than last year and the prices are lower," said Hernandez.

Since CD Plus bought the store prices for CDs have dropped because of the new corporation's greater buying power, said Hernandez.

Hernandez adds the hot sellers over the past few weeks have been Big Shiny Tunes 8, Much Dance 2004 and Black Eyed Peas.
