Yellowknife (Dec 10/03) - Amid the twinkle of Christmas lights at City Hall was the sparkle in the eyes of Hubert Noseworthy and Lenard Stanley.

They were in Yellowknife to judge the city's part in the national Winter Lights Celebrations.

"Right now Yellowknife is number one," Noseworthy said.

"They've got to beat 'cha. You've set the candles," Stanley laughed.

'They' would be the three other communities, that have registered to compete in the Winter Lights Celebrations competition.

White Rock, Fort St. John and Cranbrook in B.C. are in the same population category as Yellowknife.

Each community will be judged on light displays, cultural activities and festive programs.

The idea of the program is to get communities to make themselves inviting to tourists.

"If you come into a community and there's a nice smiling face or a nice street lit up, you want to stay," Stanley said.

"This is what we're trying to promote -- tourism and things for visitors and the community alike."

Noseworthy and Stanley were impressed with the North and the variety of winter activities available for tourists.

"They like to get involved with something like dog sledding or ice fishing or Skidooing," he said.

Everything here

"You've just got everything up here. It's wonderful. It's a sportsman's paradise."

After spending several days in Yellowknife, they continued on their journey to find the winning community.

Noseworthy says being number one has definite advantages.

"At the end of the day the winner has the bragging rights and that in itself sends a signal out to the tourists about what is happening in that community that makes them a winner."
