Yellowknife (Dec 10/03) - Mackenzie Delta MLA David Krutko was acclaimed speaker of the house in the legislative assembly on Tuesday.

Krutko has been training for the job for the past four years as deputy speaker.

He replaces former Kam Lake MLA Tony Whitford, who decided against a fourth term in the assembly.

"I think it is a privilege," said Krutko.

"It's an honour bestowed on you. As deputy minister it's been a long time coming," he joked.

Krutko said his constituents will not have to worry about whether his new position will compromise the relationship he has had with them in the past.

In fact, he feels this will only strengthen it.

"The next four years will be a challenge," he said. "But if anything, now I'll have more time to spend with my constituents. I have been able to achieve what we've been going for."

Whitford congratulated Krutko immediately following the announcement in the Great Hall, and reminded him not to forget about bathroom breaks.
