Cape Dorset (Oct 27/03) - Police arrested Kooyoo Pootoogook, 36, in Cape Dorset on Oct. 16 after receiving a frantic call for help from a woman.

Pootoogook has been charged with attempted murder, forcible confinement, two counts of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, two counts of uttering threats, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order.

The charges stem from incidents in May 2003 that continued until police received the call for help on Oct. 16.

The investigation has uncovered a violent relationship between Pootoogook and the woman who called police for help.

Police say the woman was terrorized for months and feared for her life.

"He's kept her in their house since May, preventing her from going out," said Const. Joe Baines of the Cape Dorset RCMP detachment.

The woman victim was taken to the health centre in Cape Dorset.

"She was fine," said Const. Baines, "just kind of traumatized by the whole situation. She was scared."

The woman is receiving counselling at a women's shelter.

Pootoogook is in remand at the Baffin Correctional Facility, and had a bail hearing on Friday in Iqaluit.
