Smart and getting smarter

Yellowknife (Oct 22/03) - Yellowknife's Smart Communities project is about halfway complete, according to the city's manager of information technology.

First implemented three years ago, the project was designed to link the community through a computer database -- not only Yellowknife, but the entire North.

"We expect it to be done by March of next year," Sharolynn Woodward said.

Residents can pay utility bills or parking tickets and secure permits -- all through the city's Web site.

"It is now integrated with the city's financial system."

A new addition to the city Web site is the business directory, Woodward added.

Here, one need only to type in a partial or full name of a business or search by category to locate a city business.

Registration for recreational programs can also be done online, she said.

Trish Nickerson, administrative assistant of the Smart Communities project, said while it is difficult to say how much the project will cost in total, $1.5 million has been approved for the city to complete the project.
