Fundraising goal hopefully attainable

Yellowknife (Oct 17/03) - Two Yellowknife women are training hard and campaigning even harder so they can go to Honolulu in December.

Shannan Roberts and Kirsten Carthew are the only two participants on the Arthritis Society's NWT Joints in Motion training team. In order to compete in the Honolulu marathon, however, they have to raise $12,000 by Nov. 15.

"We will raise it," said Roberts.

"There is no doubt in my mind we can raise the money." Roberts said that to date, not much money has been raised however.

"We sent 80 letters to local businesses which wasn't very successful," said Roberts.

If they don't reach their goal by the target day, the money they do raise would still go to the Arthritis Society as originally planned, but Roberts and Carthew won't be going to Hawaii.

"We are still waiting to hear back from a lot of places," said Roberts, adding letters were also sent to all of the diamond mines. "I think it will all come together."
