Broughton Island (Oct 13/03) - RCMP seized a quantity of marijuana, which was worth about $7,000 they said and arrested two women.

Dorothy Audlakik, 26, and Ryka Atsanilk, both from Iqaluit, have each been charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

The bust was made at the Qikiqtarjuaq airport on Oct. 5.

Cpl. Jeff Johnson said they received some information, which led to the bust. He couldn't comment on where the information came from.

He said there wasn't a very large quantity of drugs seized, about 100 grams in total. He added it is significant for the size of the community.

"Compared to cities down south this doesn't sound like much, but for us it's significant," he said.

The two women have been released, but they will appear in court to face the drug charges on Dec. 4, in Qikiqtarjuaq. Earlier in the spring Qikiqtarjuaq police seized about 500 grams of marijuana, which is worth about $42,000.
