Iqaluit (Sep 08/03) - Another City of Iqaluit vehicle and its driver are being investigated after a woman was hit and killed while walking with her daughter and granddaughter last Tuesday.

Margaret Jeffery, 39, was walking near the public health centre at around 3 p.m., Sept. 2, when she was struck by a city-owned front-end loader that was reversing down the road.

She was pronounced dead two hours later at the Baffin Regional hospital. Her daughter escaped injury, but her 11-month-old granddaughter, whom Jeffery carried on her back, suffered a broken leg and was admitted to hospital for observation.

The front-end loader has been seized by police and will undergo an inspection, RCMP Const. Chris Coles said.

"Just as part of the ongoing investigation, we'll be examining all aspects of mechanical failure, if any, to see what caused the accident," Coles added.

In June of this year, charges were laid against the driver of a city sewage truck after it struck and killed four-year-old Sheila Mathewsie on April 12.

Mathewsie was hit while crossing the street in the 500 block area.

The sewage truck was found to have many serious flaws that made it unsafe to drive.
