Yellowknife (Sep 26/03) - CIBC's Run for the Cure will take over the streets of Yellowknife Oct. 5.

To support breast cancer research, education, diagnosis and treatment, organizers are expecting over 1,000 people to register.

"Everyone has a relative, friend, mother or sister that has survived breast cancer or died from it," said Roslind Minault, director of the event. "In the North especially it is very well supported."

Team co-ordinator Melinda Harris agreed, and said that in small communities, particularly Yellowknife, it is common to know somebody that has been affected by breast cancer.

"People come out to show support as well as create awareness," said Harris.

"It affects so many women."

In it's 12th year, the CIBC Run for the Cure has become Canada's largest fundraising event dedicated to breast cancer research. Last year, Yellowknife's run had 1,050 participants, and raised over $200,000. Minault expects to exceed those numbers this year.

"It grows every year," she said, adding that weather could possibly have an effect on the turnout of walkers in the event. The run is open to people of all ages and registration takes place right up until the start of the run. Registration forms are available online, and also at a number of businesses around the city, including CIBC.
