Yellowknife (Sep 22/03) - The community of Kimmirut was stunned to learn of the sudden death of a four-month-old baby boy while berry picking with his extended family last Sunday afternoon, Sept. 14.

"The child passed away, and police investigation did not reveal foul play," said Const. Michele Ducharme. "Several families were there, gathered together."

The area where the family was picking berries can only be reached by boat, a few kilometers from Kimmirut.

The community was devastated with the news of the death, said Noah Qaqqasiq, recreation co-ordinator.

The Terry Fox Run planned for that day was re-scheduled for Fri., Sept. 19, with an additional run slotted for Mon., Sept. 22.

"It's so tragic," Qaqqasiq said, adding that police, nurses and social workers in the community rushed to aid the family.

Police say the baby's body has been sent to Alberta for an autopsy.

"The cause of death is not yet known," said Ducharme.
