No free ride for trustees

School boards guaranteed full election slate

Yellowknife (Sep 17/03) - Enough nominations came through to ensure both Yellowknife Education District 1 school board and the Catholic school board maintain a full slate of trustees for another year.

With seven positions available on each board, YK1 received over twice the nominations as the Catholic board.

Indeed, that the school boards will both have elections is a pleasant surprise. School boards in the past have had to struggle to convince people to run, often resulting in trustee nominees getting acclaimed, or a "free ride" through the election process.

As well, because of current trustees not returning, there will be at least one new face on each board.

Candidates for YK1 trustee positions include Terry Brookes, Mary Lou Cherwaty, Lavona Clarke, Roy Desjarlais, Audrey Enge, Reanna Erasmus, Brenda Kolson, and former mayor David Lovell.

Other candidates are Yvonne MacKean, Rob Meckling, Steve Meister, Maureen Miller, Dan Schofield, Keith Scott, Duff Spence, Dale Thomson, Debbie Weir and Mildred Wilke.

Ann Enge is the only current public school board trustee not seeking another term.

Nominations for Yellowknife Catholic board, meanwhile, include Shannon Gullberg, Amy Hacala, Jane Haley, Brian Nagel, Larry Purcka, Debbi Ross, Raymond St. Arnaud and Mary Vane.

Nancy Gardiner is the only trustee to decide against a repeat term.

Elections for trustees will run in conjunction with the city election on Oct. 20.
