May 1992

Roughly 230 members of the Canadian Association of Smelters and Allied Workers go on strike.

Sept. 18, 1992

A bomb blast rocks the 750 level of the mine and when the dust settles, nine strike-breaking miners are dead.

Sept. 12, 1994

Families of the nine miners killed in the Giant Mine blast launch a $34 million lawsuit (#5408) against close to 30 defendants.

Jan. 20, 1995

Roger Warren is convicted on nine counts of second-degree murder in connection with the bombing and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 20 years.

April 24, 1996

A judge throws out the civil case (#5408) against the Government of the NWT, Minister Tony Whitford and mine inspector Dave Turner.

The judge also dismisses the case against nine former Giant Mine employees, saying the statute of limitations has expired and they can no longer be named as defendants.

March 26, 1997

The families of the miners launch a second civil suit (#6964) against the Canadian Auto Workers Union, president Buzz Hargrove and the nine union members from the first lawsuit.

April. 17, 1997

Miner Jim O'Neil files a statement of claim seeking $1.8 million in damages from close to a dozen defendants. O'Neil, who found the bodies of the nine miners, says he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, nightmares and suicidal thoughts.

Nov. 11, 2002

The RCMP -- one of several third parties involved in the action -- withdraw from the case.

March 19, 2003

A judge orders convicted killer Roger Warren to undergo a psychological examination while imprisoned at the Stony Mountain Penitentiary, north of Winnipeg.

Warren admits to psychologist Michael Stanbrook that he planted the bomb at Giant Mine.

2002-2003

Lawyers for the plaintiffs in the second civil suit (#6964) drop their case against CAW union members Buzz Hargrove Terry Legge and Ross Slezak.

At the same time, a judge dismisses the case against the Canadian Auto Workers union.

Sept. 1-6 2003

As the date for trial nears, the plaintiffs also agree to drop their suit (#6964) against former Giant Mine employees Robert Kosta, Harold David, Bill Schram, James Mager, Conrad Lisoway, Wayne Campbell, Sylvain Amyotte, Edmund Savage and Alan Shearing.
