Volunteer Gay Kennedy says obedience training is necessary for all dog owners. |
The Yellowknife Dog Agility Club is holding a seminar Labour Day long weekend to give pet owners tips on curbing dogs of their aggression.
"This will give the owners some practical ways to work with their dog to change their behaviour," said Gay Kennedy, a volunteer with the club.
"The owners have to figure out what is upsetting their dog and then they can fix it.
"There are certain things you can do to be able to handle your dog better," added Anne Wilson, another volunteer with the club.
The seminar is being conducted by Noel Durruisseau, who Kennedy said has a wealth of knowledge in this area.
"Dealing with aggressive dogs is his specialty," she said.
She added if the owner doesn't have control, it causes other problems. Their pet can attack other animals and in some cases even people.
Kennedy said by teaching simple obedience, owners will have more control over their dog.
"If your dog knows to sit, stay and come, they won't go chasing another animal," she said. "Owners should be working with their pet so they learn these basic commands."
"My dog is always looking to me for his cues. It shows that I'm in control," added Wilson.
As for dealing with another person's aggressive dog Kennedy recommends that people give them a wide berth.
"It's always best to avoid confrontation," she said.
"You don't know what the other dog is going to do."
The seminar takes place on Aug. 29. Kennedy recommends that people register early because space is limited.
She added they have already received some interest in the seminar.
"We're happy that people are taking advantage of this program," she said.
