Heeding Terry's call

Rankin Inlet (Aug 06/03) - After a four-year hiatus the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet will once again be holding a Terry Fox Run in September.

The annual cancer fundraising event, that is heading into its 23rd year, has been absent in the hamlet because they were without a run coordinator.

This year that has all changed. Anne Bradley, along with the Evaz Group of companies, has decided to band together to bring the run back to Rankin.

Bradley works for Sanajiit Construction, one of five companies in the Evaz group.

The others include Tittaq, Qamutik Travel, KPM and the Siniktarvik Hotel.

"I think the Terry Fox Run is important. We all have been touched by cancer and anything we can do to raise funds is important," she said.

Bradley arrived in Rankin last fall from Erin, Ont.

Her old home town was very active in the Terry Fox Run. But, has she ever joined Terry's team in the past?

"I haven't I am ashamed to say. It was a really big thing in the town I am from. (Erin) had one of the first doctors who was one of the first adults to have a bone marrow transplant," said Bradley.

Helping to coordinate a run in Rankin was unexpected. She said she didn't even know the community was missing a coordinator.

But when she read an article in the Kivalliq News saying one was needed, she contacted the Terry Fox Foundation.

Already the group involved in organizing the event is working hard to get everything ready by Sept. 14.

A running route is being mapped out and donations have already been collected.

"We've already had donations from guests in the hotel who aren't going to be around, but said they wanted to donate," said Bradley.

It's only around $100 so far, but it's a start and the official campaign hasn't begun yet.

The Terry Fox Foundation was excited that Rankin would be participating again this year.

They are also still hoping a coordinator will step forward to head the campaign in Coral Harbour.
